Most small business websites don’t fail because they look dated. They fail because a visitor lands, can’t tell in a few seconds whether they’re in the right place, and leaves. Here’s what actually moves the needle.

A clear answer in five seconds

The top of your homepage should say who you help, what you do and where you do it, in plain language. “Emergency plumbing across Bournemouth and Poole” beats “Quality solutions you can trust” every time.

Fast on a phone

Most of your visitors are on mobile, often on a patchy connection. Compress images, cut heavy plugins and test the site on your own phone over 4G. If it takes more than a few seconds to show anything useful, people won’t wait.

One obvious next step

Decide the single action you want a visitor to take — call, book, request a quote — and make it the most visible button on every page. Too many options is the quickest way to get none of them.

Proof people trust

Real reviews, named clients, photos of your actual work and a face behind the business do more than any amount of clever copy. Put them close to the button you want people to press.

The basics Google looks for

  • A unique page title and description for every page
  • Your business name, address and phone number, written the same way everywhere
  • A page for each service you want to be found for
  • Secure hosting (the padlock) and a site that works on mobile

Get these five right and you’ll be ahead of most of your competitors before you’ve spent a penny on advertising.
